400 blows, Jules, jim and Truffaut....

My first visit to Suchitra introduced me to Francois Truffaut, before which I had no idea of his existence. Five movies later, I can safely say he is one of my favorite directors.
Ever since that flurry of movies, I have been hunting, unsuccessfully I must add, for Truffaut movies. Just when I had given up, I came across secret-cineam.com and found three movies.
Jules and Jim
400 Blows
The Bride wore Black
All three of which are sitting pretty in my hard disk right now.

400 blows is the first in the four part series ‘Adventures of Antoine Doinel’. Very much a cross over ‘art movie’, in the sense...its a sorta of a art movie but not really a art movie.
The 4 part series shows the life of Monsieur Antoine Doinel, widely believed to be Truffaut on-screen alter ego, from a troubled childhood to a state of confused manhood.
400 blows deals with Antoine’s troubled childhood. The thing about this movie, actually any of the Truffaut movies (that I have watched) is that, everything happens at mach speed. The characters seem sooo alive; they are always up to something. They radiate intensity and clarity of thought.
That’s the best part of Truffaut’s movies...the life that he brings into his characters.

In 400 blows Antoine (11-12 years old) is always getting into some kind of trouble with the authority, either that, or he is smoking cigars/cigarettes and playing around with his best friend. It’s the kinda movie that would bring a smile on your face without being funny.
The story, like other Truffaut movies lacks depth but still manages to remain complex. The movie ends as abruptly as its beginning. But the final scene is just a work of genius; Truffaut manages to capture the entire essence of the movie in one single shot.
I had read about the final scene in Satyajit Ray’s book ‘speaking of movies’ but having watched it, I can only agree with what Mr. Ray has to say....pure genius.

Jules and Jim is a story of 2 friends, one German and the other French. The movie is about how they love the same girl (Catherine). Sounds like a very familiar plot but is anything but that. The first half of the movie just explodes into life with the narrator providing a lively commentary on the lives of the two characters and their conquests.
Another thing about Truffaut is the way he handles Romance/Love. It’s surreal; the chemistry he creates between the characters is unbelievably feel good-y.
Of all the Truffaut movies that I have watched, I like Jules and Jim the least but there were certain things about the movie that I really liked. For instance, the way Catherine is made to be in the movie, she is a complete slut/bitch who sleeps with half the men in France and then half the men in Germany, but you really can’t hate her coz she is, as jules says in the movie, a Queen....full of life.
And the mindless conversation Jules and Jim keep having from time to time...I don’t know if there is a metaphorical artistic implication thru the dialogue but on a very basic level it doest mean chicken shit to the plot.
My favorite being Jim narrating a story of a fellow soldier stuck in the trench during the First World War. This nameless soldier manages to woo a girl into marriage who is thousands of miles away....
Again, the ending is abrupt, but I didn’t like it.

I love the view from these south indian type hill stations...the distant land, millions of miles away..seem to merge with the sky at one point. That view gets me every single time.
this was taken in.........yes........thats right.......Kodai...thou i would like to think it was Leh.
I cant wait to get to Leh....Going to Leh ranks in the 'top 10 things to do before i die' list. Considering that the farthest point that i have been away from the south is Mumbai...Leh sounds sounds like a distant echo.
